What is a family?
Family can be defined many ways: related by blood, related by marriage, individuals living together, nuclear, or extended, to name a few.
With the variety of family members’ personalities, families also experience issues big and small, difficult and simple.
Family overhaul needed?
Many times, clients come in feeling like they need a whole family overhaul. The kids feel like they are in charge, and 10-year-olds make really short-sighted family decisions.
Each day you hope that things will change. You plan a vacation hoping a change in scenery is just the answer. But it wasn’t; the disappointment and frustration return. You find yourself back where you started.
Change happens
All families undergo different types of change. Job changes, divorces, chronic disease, re-marriages, new disability, bringing Grandma to live with them – or just the everyday changes like adjusting to the stresses of a growing family – are just a few examples. Each change results in a different response from each family member.
It can be difficult from the inside to know the right way to solve the problem.
Or maybe you have tried everything that you know might work resulting in no change in the situation.
This is where family counseling can really be helpful.
I will help each family member to be heard, allowing everyone to share their perspective in a way that leads to new understanding of the issues that brought you to counseling.
One of the challenges of family counseling is that some members may seem more engaged than others in wanting to turn things around. Not to worry. Whoever shows up can make a real difference in realizing positive change.
As your family’s partner, we will work together to establish new routines to help improve understanding and skills to improve communication.
If you encounter bumps in the road, you will have the skills to maneuver them more effectively.
